Geno Belle and Caroline Sebert are the grand winners of this year’s Mahé Crazy Challenge hosted by the community, leisure and sports for all unit within the National Sports Council (NSC) last Saturday, with the latter setting a new record in the women’s category.
In the women’s challenge, Sebert clocked ten hours, 28 minutes and 06 seconds (10hr28:06), to replace Pene Vogt’s old record of 11hr41:44 set in 2017.
For this year’s challenge, the contestants left Stad Popiler and headed up North via Anse Etoile, Glacis, Beau Vallon and Bel Ombre, before they climbed up the Anse Major trail and headed to Port Launay, via Cap Ternay.
They then headed to Anse Boileau and went downtown, going through Baie Lazare, Takamaka, Anse Royale, Au Cap, Anse Aux Pins, Pointe Larue, before taking the Providence Highway to finish at Stad Popiler.
The time limit set to complete the challenge was 15 hours, and according to director of the community, leisure and sports for all unit, Francis Remie, once on the highway, bonus time were awarded to the contestants, allowing them to complete the challenge.
Contestants who did not reach the highway within the given time limit were picked up, while those on the highway within the 15 hours limit were allowed to continue.
In the men’s challenge, Belle clocked ten hours, four minutes and 35 seconds (10h04:35) to finish first, ahead of last year’s winner Noah Chilinda who was pushed into second place, after clocking 10hr10:45.
Young Yannick Annacoura – 18 years old – finish third overall in 10hr4:27, in front of Sisira Kumara who finished fourth in 10hr23:37.
Fifth overall was Keven Larue who clocked 10hr50:42.
In the women’s category, Aisha Radwan was the runner-up, finishing in 11hr20:23, ahead of third-placed Brenda Larue who was last year’s winner.
Vanessa Sinon finished fourth overall, after clocking 12hr46:45, ahead of Annita Amasogno who finished fifth overall in 12hr47:00
First organised in 2004, the challenge’s first winner was Philip Louange who clocked 14hours and 30minutes (14h30).
After different times were registered during the following challenges, it was in 2012 that James Barra set a new record – 8h52:09 – which is yet to be broken.
In the women’s category, until Saturday, the event’s record – 11h41:44 – belonged to Vogt, set in 2017, breaking that of the late Simone Jaffa – 12h23:56 – set in 2010.
