Even if we live in a small island state, some stories stand as powerful testaments to dedication and perseverance. ÌýI recently sat down with Shihan Philip Moustache, 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ' karate icon, who was recently honoured with the Medal of Honour by President Wavel Ramkalawan.

91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ NATION: Mr Moustache, congratulations on receiving the Medal of Honour. You have described this recognition as ‘long overdue’. ÌýHow did you feel when you first heard the news?
Philip Moustache: Honestly, it was a simple text message. I was initially skeptical, even thought it was a joke! It was only after being transferred to the chairman of the selection committee and recognising his voice that the gravity of the announcement truly sank in. That was the last thing on my mind. I recall with a hint of bemusement. It is ironic because just last year, a friend jokingly challenged me about the lack of local recognition, suggesting, maybe when you do 50 years of karate training they will. And as fate would have it, this year marks exactly my 50th year in martial arts.Ìý
