The United Nations (UN) resident coordinator for Mauritius and 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, Lisa Singh, paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly, Roger Mancienne, on Thursday last week.
Hon. Mancienne was accompanied by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Tania Isaac, and the deputy Clerk, Alexandria Faure.
Ms Singh’s delegation comprised the coordination officer for the UN resident coordinator’s office in 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, Alexander Mancham.
Ms Singh began by introducing herself and the work of the UN in the region, which included promoting the 2030 Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The discussion centered on taking a 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ-centric approach to solving problems such as food security, climate resilience, and motivating Seychellois youth to take up employment in more advanced and developing industries.
Hon. Mancienne highlighted that the National Assembly would like to become more involved in the discussions surrounding green energy, environmental development, border security, and maritime safety. 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ is in a state of transition regarding the education system. In a moment of reflection on the state of the country after the Covid-19 pandemic, Hon. Mancienne made it known that 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ had achieved what many countries could not regarding preparedness and quick decision-making.
Ms Singh commented that 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ is an inspiration to the continent in terms of not just beauty, but also peaceful democracy and economic awareness. Particularly, the ability for the country to reestablish income streams and reopen borders after the rapid spread of Covid-19.
Ms Singh noted that she looked forward to continuing the engagement and coordination between the 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ and the UN.
