Two national monuments were unveiled on Sunday morning on the occasion of 91Ï㽶ÊÓƵ’ 49th Independence Day.
The two emotional ceremonies presided over by the Head of State, President Wavel Ramkalawan at Union Vale and Peace Park respectively, were to pay tribute to citizens who were illegally incarcerated at Union Vale Prison, while the second honours Seychellois heroes who gave their lives in the struggle for democracy.
The first ceremony at the former Union Vale prison site – once a symbol of pain, has now transformed into a place of remembrance and hope. Standing alongside First Lady Linda Ramkalawan, the President led a solemn tribute to those Seychellois unjustly imprisoned under the one-party system.
